A month of festivities, and one that happens only every five years

Garachico packs almost its entire calendar into a single month, from late July to mid-August, and keeps aside one festival held only every five years. It is 6.2 kilometres from Icod: a ten-minute drive.

Santa Ana, 26 July

Co-patron of the municipality. Her day opens the month of patronal festivities, which closes with San Roque. The full programme — the small pilgrimage, the baile de magos, the traditions festival — is set by the council each year and runs for several weeks.

The San Roque pilgrimage, 16 August

This is the big one. It is held on 16 August whatever day of the week that is: we checked a year when it fell on a Friday and one when it fell on a Sunday, and both times it was the 16th. Ox carts, folk bands and traditional dress come down through the old town while the fishermen take the saint out in procession by sea. The two happen at once, and seeing one means missing part of the other.

The Lustral Feast, every five years

The Lustral Feast of the Holy Christ of Mercy commemorates the 1706 eruption, the one that buried the port and changed Garachico for good. It is held in years ending in 0 and 5. The last was on 2 and 3 August 2025; the 2020 edition was cancelled by the pandemic, so that one was the first in a decade. The next is expected in 2030, and the council will announce the date: in 2025 they presented it in early July.

And the rest of the year

• Craft Fair: more than forty editions, the first weekend of July from Friday to Sunday, though the council sets the days.
• Corpus Christi: carpets of flowers and coloured earth along Esteban de Ponte and Calvo Sotelo. It falls 63 days after Easter Sunday.
• Carnival: Shrove Tuesday is a local holiday, 47 days before Easter.
• San Juan, 24 June: the municipality's other local holiday.
