Icod de los Vinos
The municipality where Finca Julia stands holds the largest known dragon tree, a listed historic quarter, Europe's largest lava tube and its own wine denomination of origin. It also has land inside Teide National Park.
The place
A town halfway up the slope
Icod sits between the sea and the summit, and that explains most of it. The coast is below, with San Marcos beach tucked into a cove; the old town is halfway up; and above it begin the midlands, the fruit trees, the lava fields and the pine woods. Finca Julia is on that middle stretch.
It is one of the twelve municipalities with land inside Teide National Park, and it gives its name to the Ycoden wine district. The surname "de los Vinos" is not decorative.

The dragon tree, the cave and the square
The Millennial Dragon Tree has been a National Monument since 1917 and is partly visible from the square, free; the full visit is through the Parque del Drago. The Cueva del Viento is in the same municipality and needs advance booking. And Plaza de la Pila, with its 1716 fountain, is the town's real centre.
