This is the morning we suggest for day one: no car until lunchtime, the best-known sights done before the coaches arrive, and Garachico as the reward.

The plan, step by step
First thing
Coffee on Calle San Agustín or San Sebastián
They are the old town's two café streets, according to Icod's own tourism site. None publishes opening hours, so you walk down and read the sign on the door — still more reliable than any website.
When the park opens
The dragon tree from inside
You can glimpse it from the square for free. To see all of it, with its seventeen-metre girth, you go into the Parque del Drago, which opens at nine year-round. At that hour there is nobody there.
Mid-morning
The old town, on foot and without a map
A listed Historic Site, and compact: Plaza de la Pila, San Marcos, the former San Francisco convent and Calle San Sebastián link up in an hour or so. There are arcades, so it survives a shower.

For lunch
Garachico, nine minutes away
A coastal town, listed old quarter since 1994, and far more choice for lunch than Icod for its size. The council lists twenty-nine restaurants with phone numbers but no hours, so ring ahead if it is a Sunday.
