Start here because it is emptiest at nine in the morning. You can see part of it from Plaza de la Constitución without paying; the full visit means going into the Parque del Drago, which opens at nine year-round.

In the old town you eat a minute from the dragon tree. If the afternoon plan is the beach, go down to San Marcos now and eat facing the sea: six minutes' drive and you save yourself a climb.

The Cueva del Viento

Europe's largest lava tube is in this same municipality, nine minutes from the old town. You must book ahead, groups are capped at fifteen and the minimum age is five: this is not somewhere you turn up and walk in.

San Marcos beach

Black sand in an enclosed cove, which is what makes it the municipality's beach for children. Six minutes from the old town, with the sun setting straight ahead.
Good to know
The Cueva del Viento is booked by phone or through its website, and in high season it is worth doing days ahead. If there is no space, the Mariposario del Drago fills the same afternoon slot and is indoors.
