El Tanque · What to see

El Tanque

An inland municipality in the Isla Baja district, between Garachico, Los Silos and Santiago del Teide, with a rural feel and traditional village houses. In El Tanque Bajo stands the church of San Antonio de Padua, rebuilt in 1728 after the 1706 eruption and listed as a Site of Cultural Interest. The Cabildo's BIC catalogue also lists, in the municipality, the Casa de los Guzmanes, a traditional farmhouse in the upper part of El Tanque Bajo, and the rock engravings of Las Partidas de Franquis at the foot of Montaña de Tomás Seche. More than half of the land is protected, the Lomo Alto and El Lagarito viewpoints look out over the coast, and the road towards Santiago del Teide passes the hamlets of Ruigómez and Erjos.

Parque Puerta de Tierra

Garachico · 10 min drive

A park in Garachico that preserves the 16th-century gate that once led into the harbour. It also holds an old wine press that belonged to the San Juan Degollado estate. Another corner remembers the poet Rafael Alberti, who came to Garachico in 1991.

Castillo de San Miguel

Garachico · 9 min drive

A castle in Garachico, on Avenida Tomé Cano. Philip II gave permission to build it in 1575 as a defence against possible attacks on the coast, the town and its wealth. It was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 1999.

Iglesia Matriz de Santa Ana

Garachico · 10 min drive

Garachico's mother church dates from 1520. The land came from Cristóbal de Ponte, who founded the town, and the dedication nods to his wife, Ana de Vergara. It had to be rebuilt after the 1706 eruption. Inside, look for two pieces: the Mexican-made Cristo de la Misericordia and the 17th-century font.

Piscinas naturales de El Caletón

Garachico · 9 min drive

Natural pools carved out where the 1706 lava met the sea, each with its own name: Las Viejas, Los Niños, Los Chorros. The most popular bathing spot in the north-west, linked to Garachico's seafront by the promenade.
