The car, first
TITSA buses cover the north coast well: line 363 links Puerto de la Cruz, San Juan de la Rambla, Icod, Garachico and Buenavista, and the 108 climbs to La Laguna and Santa Cruz. What they do not cover is the midlands, and the house is in the midlands. With a car this area is the island's best base; without one, it is a compromise.
Which airport to fly into
Tenerife Norte is 45.7 km and 43 minutes from the Icod old town, computed over OpenStreetMap data. Tenerife Sur is considerably further and almost always has the cheaper flights: the sum to do is whether the fare saving covers the long hour of driving on arrival and on the way back.
What to pack for somewhere that is green for a reason
North Tenerife rains more than the south, and that is where its landscape comes from. A light windproof and one more layer than you would pack for a “beach” island will do it. And if Teide is on the plan, pack properly warm clothes: there are more than three thousand metres between the house and La Rambleta.
